Who this version is for
FineReader PDF for Mac is the ABBYY recognition engine and PDF tools adapted for macOS. Its strongest side is the same as in the Windows versions: accurate text recognition with layout retention and conversion to editable formats. At the same time it is a separate product with its own license, and some Windows features are missing – this is important to know before buying.
What you can do
Recognize text and convert. Scanned documents, PDFs without a text layer and document photos become searchable PDFs or editable Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML, RTF, TXT, CSV, ODT files. Layout, tables and columns are retained. You can also save to the e-book formats EPUB and FB2.
View and edit PDFs. Document navigation, full-text search, comments and markup, page management, merging documents.
Prepare for archiving and accessibility. Documents can be saved in the PDF/A and PDF/UA standards – the first for long-term storage, the second so that screen readers can read the document.
Work the macOS way. Dark mode is supported, and with Continuity Camera you can photograph a document on your iPhone and it appears on your Mac immediately. The built-in image editor improves photos and scans before recognition.
What this version does not have
To be honest – this is the most important part of this page:
- PDF creation is only possible from scanned documents and paper, not from any file.
- Protection is limited to a password and only for an already created PDF; there are no digital signature features as in the Windows versions.
- Creating fillable PDF forms is not available.
- Document comparison is not available – it is only in the Corporate version on Windows.
- Automated processing (Hot Folder), ABBYY Screenshot Reader and FineReader for iOS is not available.
- License types: only Per Seat (from 5 licenses) and Site License (from 50) are available. Concurrent and Remote User are not offered for the Mac version.
If you need forms, comparison or signatures – you will need the Windows version. If your main work is recognizing and converting documents on a Mac, this version is enough.
