ABBYY FineReader PDF comes in three editions: Standard and Corporate for Windows computers, and FineReader PDF for Mac for Apple computers. All of them recognise text in scanned documents (OCR) and work with PDF files, but they differ in features. This article explains who each edition is for, how they differ, whether to choose a 1-year or 3-year subscription, and how to get your licence key.
First question: Windows or Mac
Your computer decides first. Standard and Corporate run on Windows 11 and Windows 10 (64-bit). FineReader PDF for Mac runs on macOS 12 and later, on Macs with an Intel processor or an Apple Silicon chip. A licence is for the system it was bought for: a Windows licence cannot be used on a Mac, and vice versa.
FineReader PDF Standard: who it is for
Standard is the main Windows edition, with AI-based text recognition. It is enough if you need to:
- recognise text in scans and photos (198 recognition languages);
- convert PDF to Word, Excel and other formats;
- edit, comment on and organise PDF documents;
- protect PDFs with a password and sign them;
- create fillable PDF forms;
- work together with Microsoft Office applications.
Standard and Corporate both suit private users and companies alike – they differ only in features, not in who uses the program.
FineReader PDF Corporate: when it is worth paying more
Corporate has everything in Standard plus two extra features:
- Document comparison – the program finds text differences between two versions of a document, even in different formats, for example a Word file and a scanned PDF.
- Automated conversion with Hot Folder – the program processes files placed in a chosen folder on its own. Up to 5 000 pages per month can be processed this way; the limit resets every 30 days.
Choose Corporate if you often compare versions of contracts or other documents, or regularly convert large numbers of scanned files. If you do not need these two features, Standard is fully sufficient.
FineReader PDF for Mac: what to know
The Mac edition turns PDFs, scans and photos into editable and searchable files, recognises 198 languages and supports Dark Mode and Continuity Camera. The manufacturer’s comparison table lists two differences from the Windows editions: the Mac edition creates PDFs only from scans and paper documents, and password protection is available only after the PDF has been created.

1 year or 3 years: which to choose
FineReader PDF is sold as a subscription: the licence is valid for the chosen period – 1 or 3 years. A 3-year subscription costs less than buying the yearly one three times: you save 29,90 € on Standard, 49,90 € on Corporate and 19,90 € on Mac.
A yearly subscription is more convenient if you are not sure you will still need the program in a year. If you use FineReader every day, the 3-year subscription is the cheapest option. Before buying you can try the program free for 7 days – the manufacturer offers a trial version with no payment required.
How to get your licence key
